Purpose of MEChA de SDSU's High School Conference:
The purpose of Movimiento Estudiantil Chicanx de Aztlán de San Diego State University (M.E.Ch.A.) high school conference is to promote higher education to underprivileged youth through cultural consciousness, political awareness, and community involvement. By underprivileged youth, we mean specifically targeting but not limiting ourselves to: AB540 students, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), First-generation college students, working-class/low-income students, and students of color. We begin targeting students as young as the 8th grade because we feel as though this is the time period in which students begin discussing their aspirations post high school graduation, and when programs such as AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) and Upward Bound begin to appear in the school systems. Apart from the students, we welcome parents to our Parent conference, which takes place while the students are attending the various workshops available to them. During the Parent Conference, parents receive information on financial aid and other resources most parents of the students mentioned above do not know about. For over 50 years, we have built a greater bond between San Diego State University and its surrounding community by targeting these individuals, by exposing the campus to students in attendance, and by facilitating the process to attend an institution of higher education. Students attain important information from the various workshops that focus on educational, cultural, and political topics. Some topics covered in past workshops have included financial aid information, Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), life on our campus, misconceptions about the term Chicanx, the fight for ethnic studies, and how to be consistently involved with local community organizations for the betterment of the community.
